Yes! This is a helpful way to get a feel for someone's voice and different writing styles. I haven't tried it very much, but I did find that handwriting it gives a much better feel than typing and I'll second a recommendation for trying it at least once. I think Ursula K. Le Guin also mentioned something similar in Steering the Craft, but I can't remember exactly.
I 100% agree with reading a lot, especially in the genre you intend to write, even re-reading books. But, formally typing/writing out passages feels little like plagiarism (probably just me), unless its a creative writing class.

I prefer handwriting for a first draft! the words flow much more easily for me

I don't think it's plagiarism because it's not being published. It's just a creative exercise to feel the rhythm of the writing.
its not, but id be worried those words burned in my brain and I'd reuse them later, like muscle memory.
